Each year, the World Space Week Association (WSWA) selects a theme for the upcoming World Space Week (WSW) to provide a focus of the activities and events that take a place throughout the world, during 4-10 October.
The World Space Week 2024 theme is "Space and Climate Change". This theme celebrates the transformative impact of space technology in our ongoing battle against climate change, emphasizing the proactive role space exploration plays in enhancing our understanding and management of Earth’s climate.
World Space Week 2024 will inspire students worldwide to study STEM and business, and offer space companies the opportunity to recruit the workforce needed for the expanding commercial space industry. It will also serve as a forum for important discussions on the transition of Low Earth Orbit to a more entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The growth of World Space Week reflects widespread acceptance of this synchronized time frame to celebrate space, inspire students using space, and promote space programs, policies, and organizations. WSW is celebrated by a network of over 1,000 space-related organizations, the largest such network in the world, according to WSWA.
The Association’s Board each year selects a theme for World Space Week to provide a focus of the activities and events that take a place in over 80 nations during 4-10 October. WSW event organizers are encouraged to incorporate the theme into their activities and promotional materials.
Anyone, from anywhere in the world, can create a World Space Week event. The theme is a guideline for creating events, however, WSWA accepts the registration of any space-related events which start or end from 4 to 10 October as an official World Space Week event.
WSW event organizers are encouraged to incorporate the theme and poster into their activities and promotional materials. To see the history of World Space Week themes, please click here.

What is the World Space Week?
World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events:
* October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration
* October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.
World Space Week consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. These synchronized space events attract greater public and media attention. World Space Week 2023 achieved record scale:
* more than 16,000 events
* Events in 80 nations
World Space Week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association (WSWA). The WSWA leads a global team of National Coordinators, who promote the celebration of World Space Week within their own countries.
Total audience since 2007:
* Over 2,000,000 attendees
* Nearly 500,000,000 media impressions
