Solar Eclipses in the Cult of St. George

The International Scientific Conference and School on Computing for Physics and Technology

CPT 2017 - Larnaca, Cyprus, 9 May, 2017

CPT2017 - ISBN 978-5-88835-049-2

ABSTRACT: In this research paper on archaeoastronomy it is shown that the cult of St. George possesses many characteristics of solar eclipse description. It is reviewed that the cultrepresents the transformation of the basic myth of the Struggle of the God of the Sunwith a Snake.

It was proved by Aymen M. Ibrahem that observations of total solar eclipses weredescribed by this myth. Based on literature resources as well as iconographic materialin different Christian culture traditions, it is shown that despite the long chain oftransformations: God of the Sun  Thunder God  St. George, many features of theoutlook, which can be explained in the contents of solar eclipses only, were presentedin the cult of St. George.

This research is based on the study of solar eclipses in the outlook and culture ofIndo-Europeans. It was published in the “ Solar Eclipses in the Outlook of the Slavs ” ,in which methods of studying ancient cultural heritage were examined

ABSTRACT: Observations of Near Earth Objects (NEOs) became an important part of astronomy. Meteor showers and fireballs are being monitored yearly by the Kition Planetarium and Observatory. Data are shared with observatories from other countries and the International Meteor Organization. Educational programs developed by the organization are providing attendees the skills for meteor and asteroid observations. Results of international research programs and participation in meteor and asteroid observations are widely used in public outreach. The international collaboration is described in details on the example of flyby of fireball over Cyprus on the 8th September 2016

Solar Eclipses in the Outlook of the Slavs

Solar Eclipses in the Outlook of the Slavs

Published in: Astrophysics & Aerospace Technology ISSN: 2329-6542

Journal of Astrophysics & Aerospace Technology

Research Article

Prokofyev, J Astrophys Aerospace Technol 2014, 2:2

DOI: 10.4172/2329-6542.1000107

ABSTRACT: The article provides an overview of descriptions of total solar eclipses in different literature forms, rites and toponyms of Slavs. It is shown that the solar eclipse had a prominent role in the worldview of the tribes. Explanations of some terms of Slavic outlook are given with suggestions for the correct terminology. A program for further investigation in Slavic and other people’s culture is proposed.

POSTER: DISC DYNAMICS & PLANET FORMATION

DISC DYNAMICS & PLANET FORMATION

INTERNATIONAL ASTROPHYSICS CONFERENCE

(MEMBER OF THE ORGANIZING COMITTEE)

Disc Dynamics and Planet Formation Conference 29/6-3/7 at UCLan Cyprus Campus

The connection between star formation, protostellar discs and planetary systems is unquestionable but the path from stars to planets is highly uncertain. Recent discoveries with space-borne telescopes (Spitzer, CoRoT, Kepler) and ground-based facilities (VLT, Gemini, ALMA) have given new impetus to the search for exoplanetary systems and for the properties of their maternal discs.

The number of known exoplanets has doubled within the last year thanks to transit observations, and the discovery of an increasing number of directly-imaged wide-orbit exoplanets has shown that they are more diverse than we may have thought. At the same time the properties of the discs where these planets form are revealed from their earliest phases around young embedded protostars to their latest phases when most of the gas has dispersed.

The discovery of the first exoplanet, a hot Jupiter, two decades ago, challenged planet formation theories and introduced the idea that planets migrate within their host disc towards the central star. In the last few years the discovery of wide-orbit exoplanets has similarly put planet formation theories to the test.

Are we confident that we know how discs form, what physical processes drive their evolution and how gas giants and terrestrial planets eventually form in and interact with them? This meeting aims at bringing together theorists and observers to discuss recent developments on the theory of disc dynamics and planet formation, how these fit with current observations, and what we may expect in the future.

Topics:

The formation of protostellar discs – Observations of protostellar discs – Disc accretion theory and disc dispersal – Protostellar disc modeling: hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, magnetic fields, turbulence – Planet formation; core accretion and disc fragmentation – Disc-planet interactions and planet migration – Debris discs and the late-phase evolution of planets/planetary systems
