PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE (CYPRUS)

TUESDAY 25 OCTOBER 2022

Solar eclipse is the most significant phenomenon, which influence humanity not only in science but in outlook, tradition and culture.

In late Paleolithic period myths of creation and of the world were rational explanations of observations of solar eclipses.

In Ancient Babylon the long lasted eclipse observations brought to discovery of their periodicity,

which was summarized in Antikythera Mechanism constructed by Ancient Greeks.

Its reconstruction is in permanent exhibition in the KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY

and is the only one in Cyprus availabe for the public.

Now we predict place and time of any eclipse with high accuracy and only clouds may influence observations.

Solar eclipses happen rarely and their experience is unique. It is impossible to forget this extraordinary spectacle which is put on a play by celestial bodies.

On 25 October 2022 there will be partial solar eclipse. The shadow (umbra) of the Moon will pass by our planet,

but in the parts which will be covered by semi-shadow (penumbra) the partial solar eclipse will be observed.

They will be practically the whole Europe, North Africa and Western to Central parts of Asia.

For partial phases when just the fifth part of the solar disk is eclipsed are easily visible by naked eye,

this eclipse will be observed practically by all population of the Old World.

Conditions of observations of the partial solar eclipse on 25 October 2022 in the KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY:

Cyprus time

First contact 12:49:48

Maximum 14:02:39

Fourth contact 15:15:28

NOTE. It is prohibited to look on solar disk during partial phases of an eclipse by unprotected eye!

Special equipment is necessary to conduct safe observations.

The beginning of the eclipse will be on the western part of the solar disc (on the images zenith is to the top) for the Moon moves eastward

with respect to the fixed stars twelve times faster than the Sun, in case of Cyprus it will be top western side this time.

At maximum the Sun will be covered by the lunar disc almost till the middle. This stunning phase can be additionally observed as horned shadows

and patches of reflected light on the ground. The end of the eclipse (the fourth contact) will happen when the Moon will get off the solar disc on the eastern top side.

The KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY will hold a special international Science cafe for the Partial Solar Eclipse on 25 October 2022 at 20:00.

Observations of this eclipse in Cyprus can be conducted with special equipment only.

For visual observations by the naked eye it is recommended to use

special astronomical glasses for solar eclipses.

These glasses securely protect eyes from ultraviolet radiation,

the most harmful to the health component of sunlight.

They are available fo sale at the gift shop of the KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY.

NEVER LOOK AT THE SUN WITH UNPROTECTED EYES.
