2015 INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF LIGHT ελληνικά english по-русски

2015 INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF LIGHT

AND LIGHT-BASED TECHNOLOGIES

In 2015 we will celebrate the "International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies." The official launch will take place in January with a big ceremony in Paris, the headquarters of "UNESCO" where many famous physicists and Nobel laureates will attend.

The aim of the International Year of Light is to spread worldwide, the manner in which light and light-based technologies affect every aspect of human life. Relevant events in 2015 involve more than 85 countries.

In 2009 the European Physics Society proposed the establishment of an International Year of Light (and light-based technologies), and the UN General Assembly fulfilled this proposal by declaring the year 2015 as the year for celebrating light, with a decision taken in 2013.

The major scientific anniversaries that will be celebrated during International Year of Light 2015 are:

1015: Works on optics by Ibn Al-Haytham
1815: The motion of light as a wave proposed by Fresnel
1865: The electromagnetic theory of light propagation proposed by Maxwell
1915: Einstein’s theory of the photoelectric effect in 1905 and of the embedding of light in cosmology through general relativity theory
1965: Discovery of the cosmic microwave background by Penzias and Wilson, and Charles Kao’s achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication.

The International Year of Light includes a series of hundreds of events around the world, which will bring together scientists (from astronomers and physicists to physicians and biologists), engineers and artists, with main focus to highlight the importance of light and light-based technologies for society.

You can see the full calendar of planned events on the website International Year of Light and Light-based Technologieshttp://www.light2015.org

The KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY is recognized National Coordinator for the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies at Cyprus and holds events nationwide.
